Based on Intel's 82559 communications processor, the NC3123 server adapter incorporates a variety of features for faster throughput than previous 10/100 adapters, increasing flexibility and reducing support costs. The NC3123 delivers industry-standard drivers that are compatible with other Compaq NC series Fast Ethernet adapters. Full-duplex support allows the NC3123 to transmit and receive data simultaneously at rates up to 20 Mbps for Ethernet and 200 Mbps for Fast Ethernet. Performance is further enhanced with 6 KB of buffer memory, which makes for low CPU utilization at high throughputs. Auto-sensing capabilities enable it to automatically negotiate between 10 and 100 Mbps to achieve the highest common speed on the network. Transmit Load Balancing (TLB) and Switch-Assisted Load Balancing (FEC/GEC/802.3ad static-mode configuration only) are two port-bonding methods supported by the NC3123. TLB provides both failover and balancing of transmit traffic across all adapters for increased performance. For even higher performance, Switch-Assisted Load Balancing (SLB) provides port failover and balancing of both transmit and receive traffic across all adapters when connected to a switch that supports this feature. This controller uses bus-mastering technology to maximize throughput and minimize CPU utilization. The NC3123 features a robust Plug-and-Play capability and PCI 2.2 support for conflict-free auto configuration. With SmartStart support, adapter installation is easily integrated into the setup of the operating system and machine.
