The Intrusion Sensor uses a rule-based detection method to examine protocol fields. They are set to look for specific attacks against a protocol, or to look for the conditions of an attack. Each sensor includes a built-in rules database that includes full descriptions of common vulnerabilities and exposures. Security administrators are able to adjust all rules to fine-tune inspection, specify source and destination addresses and offset the inspection point to improve performance and catch threats that are hidden deep within the data payload.
